I’m reminded of just how good Trollhunters was but also of how it kinda peaked in the middle of Season 3 and went rapidly downward from then on. Those pure None Shall Live Scenes, just...every time the amulet powered up...Claire’s mystery arc of discovering magic and developing her skill without getting any instruction, unlike Jim who was tutored by both his friends and his enemies and who was able to profit from centuries of knowledge and tradition...like, the way she had to go in completely blind and find out...and the way she did so well considering the circumstances... just the top tier humor, the NotEnrique and Chompsky and Goblin bits, Angor Rot and Strickler as glorious, complex and entertainingly dangerous villains... Draal... Draal... Toby and Barbara both knowing they were not the main characters yet still doing such a great job with their respective roles... and Jim being consistently conflicted about doing what was right and wondering what it meant to be a human warrior serving non-human creatures...

...and then the parents found out.

Idk that’s when it immediately turned sour for me.

Like, Barbara never really took a stance on what the discovery of the reality of trolls meant to her - it sort of remained her son’s “thing”. But what about herself? Was it cool to her? Did it spark her curiosity, her desire to explore and research - regarding new ways of medical treatment, for example? Why’d she never comment about Strickler’s ability to shapeshift...and did she like his horns in the end? Was she ever anything else than afraid and worried for the normalcy she used to know, instead of rejecting or embracing the possibilities and the wonder of the magical world?

Then Merlin appears, and it’s fine in itself that he is the character he is. He’s quirky and iconic and doesn’t have to change. But what happened to “Master Jim was correct! We are stronger together!” (quote Blinky, from when Claire opened the giant portal at the end of Season 2)? Why did Jim continue to walk alone after so many experiences that supposedly taught him the strength of community? Heck, he taught that exact principle to a desperate Nomura who had given up on someone coming for her in the Darklands!!! Yet it’s like he fails to learn the same lesson over and over...he makes the mistake of going into a life-threatening situation by himself, is then helped by his friends, everyone including himself assumes that he will natually choose better next time and then... he keeps repeating the exact same pattern endlessly as if he has amnesia. I understand that it might take a fictional hero a couple times for a certain lesson to sink in, just like it would for a real life person. But Jim never learns (not even in Wizards, not even in Rott). It gets frustrating and boring. Don’t get me wrong, I quite like Troll!Jim now, he grew on me. But it shouldn’t have been Merlin’s influence that drove Jim to become a troll “because there was no other way”, but because Jim decided for himself that this was the best way. He should have rejected Merlin’s initial suggestion, then realized he wanted it himself. Because frankly half his life and over half of his friendships were in the troll world by then, he loved their species and there were obvious advantages to fighting Gunmar as a troll - if only to truly understand their ways. But Jim’s character development kept being dictated by outside parties and therefore, got ground to a stagnating halt. He never learned to think beyond the authority of the people who made the amulet or wore it before him. He stayed dependent on all of the destiny stuff they told him instead of considering that the amulet might have been a tool of its own mind, bound to him, helping him into the freedom of making his own choices. Of course there is the aspect of only one person being able of carrying Daylight. But Jim did not have to follow the preset course that Merlin intended it for. I wish he didn’t. And that’s why, even though I’m happy that he became Troll!Jim, the ending of Season 3 just wasn’t as good as it could have been.

Jim, sweet gullible Jim who was just a little bit too receptive for random people’s guidance because he lacked a father figure, did not learn what I was led to believe was his arc over 3 whole seasons of plot, (to discern which voices to listen to and to gather confidence in his own strength while following a destiny) and since that issue was never finished nor fixed, the creators never gave him a new arc beyond the original problem, and so... that’s why Jim grew ultimately redundant. Slowly in Wizards, at lightning speed in Rott. And that’s how we ended up with a repetitive, nonsensical cycle of plot.

While Jim’s physical action potential grew consistently without his character truly evolving, Douxie on the other hand made it a point to learn how to grow personally fast.

Love him for it. Still wish he had been the main guy in Rott. Perhaps all would have been well. :) My point is, I really miss the earlier days of Trollhunters, because they really were that enjoyable and good!!!!

To be fair, Duke is relatively new. I think if you give it a few years he'll become more popular. It's not a surprise we don't see much of him in the fandom when other characters like Dick or Jason are 40+ years old (heck, Dick is 80+ years old, and a pretty impactful character as the first teenage hero sidekick; his popularity is unexpected). Tim and Damian are older as well but not as much as the former two, and Damian didn't have much of a character until years later in 2006, but he still has 8 years over Duke even then.

(and you could say the popularity comes easier for the robins since Robin itself is a very iconic character, so people will be paying more attention when there's a new official Robin)

As for the Batgirls, Barbara is older than every Robin except for Dick, but although less talked about than the robins, I believe she is quite popular. However, she does deserve more attention as her own character since she's mostly known because of her connection to the bats (specially Dick and Bruce).

Steph and Cassandra are older than Duke as well, both only having 7 years of difference between their debuts, and they've been around for 20+ years already, so they I can say are pretty underrated inside the batfamily.

P.S.: I just read the tags after typing all of this. Seems you already mentioned the fact that Duke is newer, sorry.

I’m a fan of Channel Awesomes’ Fanscription series and the best videos so far are the Tim Burton Batman movies.

Their recent rewrite of “Batman and Robin” is the best one as they made a lot of nice changes for the plot and even did things I wasn’t expecting which made the rewrite even better. Though that was the last of the classic Batman movies, I strangely could see one more being made through a "What if Time Burton directed a Batman movie featuring Poison Ivy and Bane" as I was surprised that there weren't any references to Poison Ivy in the Batman and Robin rewrite. Heck I thought Inca was going to be revealed to be Pamela Isley but she either changed her name to Inca or Chip just called her that as a weird nickname.  If they ever decide to do one without the “Inca is Ivy” idea, here is what I could the plot being about. Several years have passed since the last movie, and we see it through Gotham as its more like the 2000s. Batman has become an icon for the city of Gotham City, heck people travel to the city in hopes to get a glimpse of him and visit historical spots of his career and this in turn has been profitable to the city as it has been able to use that money to make changes that have helped decrease homelessness and poverty there. Things have also been good for our characters, such as Dick and Barbara have graduated college and are still together. We also learn that Catwoman has been helping deal with crime in Gotham and though she is still a thief, she uses her newfound wealth to help the underprivileged in a Robin Hood kind of way. The only one having it a bit rough is Bruce Wayne as though he has been helping the city in more ways than one, you can tell it’s taking it out of him and we clearly see this in the film like how he gets easily hit by a henchman at the beginning of the movie. Besides that things are pretty good until the heroes run into some henchman and realize that a foreign drug cartel is now in Gotham and are committing crimes, but discover they are after dangerous chemicals. This is where the new, uprising businesswoman that has been taking Gotham by storm comes in, named Pamela Isley. Pamela is the CEO of a eco-friendly company who wants to try and make Gotham and the world greener with experimental plants infused with chemicals that aid in decreasing CO2 levels and get rid of other pollutants in the air and soil, and though there is an interest in it, a lot of people only pay attention because Pamela is hot which annoys her a bit. Bruce is one of the few people that look beyond that and Isley thought he could help speed up getting her plants green lit by the government, but Bruce thinks the plants could be dangerous in the wrong hands since the chemicals in them could be used to produce some nasty stuff if extracted properly. He is willing to help her get them released once her company finds a better way to make the chemicals in them less dangerous, and though Isley understands, she is a bit annoyed that Bruce doesn’t care about the environment as much as she does. Eventually Bruce’s concern are justified as during a conflict as Batman he fights more cartel members at one of Isley’s factories, and of course criminals+chemicals+Batman=trouble as during the fight, where Pamela was coincidently working on her plants, an explosion occurs that causes Isley to go MIA, the criminals to get away with some deadly materials, and cause some bug property damage. This is another scene of Batman wondering if he should retire only for the others to give him hope, along with another scene of Bruce denying rest when he really could use some. This is also where I could see someone like Robin making a joke about how Batman can pay for the damages with his “Bat Credit Card” which is followed by Batman and the others looking at him with a “REALLY?” like face, playing on how infamous that joke has become XD. We eventually discover that Pamela is still alive but was mutated by her chemicals, which she is alright with as she realizes she is closer to plants than ever before as she can communicate and control them. This happiness doesn’t last though as she discovers her business got closed down due the bad press it got from the explosion at her lab and seeing how dangerous her plants could be, which drives her insane and decides to use her newly obtained powers to try and destroy Gotham for the plants as her new persona Poison Ivy. She would first use her powers to kill the biggest polluters in Gotham till she eventually discovers her pheromones could make those that find her attractive to do what she wants, and tries to use her new servants to get her plants planted till Batman and the others discover what she is doing and ambush her at one of her victim’s homes. They try to stop Ivy, but she uses her powers to make Batman and Robin fall for her, where we get a scene of Batman and Robin fight each other for a bit THEN are ordered by Ivy to fight Batgirl (and Catwoman who was nearby) until the ladies are able to bring the guys back to their senses, though there is some temporary lovers quarrels as a result. Though Poison Ivy may have failed this time, her recent crimes attracted the attention of the drug cartel who are able to counter her powers enough so that they could take her to meet their leader, a masked guy named Bane. Bane states he and Ivy both hate Gotham as it is, and he proposes and alliance where in exchange in her help destroying the city, Ivy could use the desolation to turn it into a plant paradise. Ivy is skeptical at first but Bane says he is an honorable man and swears to not do anything to destroy their alliance, and after some proof Ivy accepts. During this alliance Bane is able to use Ivy’s plant knowledge to help him complete the formula for his military grade steroid formula that he calls Venom, which in a twist was originally created by Wayne Enterprises. We would later find out Bane’s true target is Wayne Enterprises because when Bruce was declared dead in Winter's End, a corrupted businessman at the company shortly took over some branches where he green lit deadly experiments (like Venom that was tested on him and other volunteers) that quickly destroyed Bane's hometown and even kill his family, making him vow revenge on the company and destroying Gotham would do this. Bane's inclusion to the story would lead us to plot points similar to the famous Knightfall comic storyline as with Ivy’s help along with giving his crew Venom, Batman and the other heroes are weakened so they can't get in his way.  He eventually realizes Bruce and Batman are the same person, which leads to the fight where he breaks Batman's back, leaving Batman unable to fight as he and Ivy take down Gotham. Unlike Knightfall though, this gives Robin and Batgirl some development as they would have to take Batman's place and try to stop the villains on their own while Batman heals with the aid of Catwoman where they have a few romantic moments together, but that doesn’t stop Bruce and Lucas from working on their latest project. I could see Batman helping the others from the Batcave like Bruce does in Batman Beyond, which would be a cool reference. I also see Robin being giving his Nightwing suit, which in the movie is just an upgraded suit that gives him more strength and features so he can fight alone. Eventually Batman is well enough to fight again but after learning from his last fight, Batman uses the newly built Bat Power Armor and with his allies goes to stop Bane, and good timing to as Bane finally has what he needs to destroy Gotham. Turns out it’s a bomb but he plans on detonating it on a fault under the city like Chip tried to do in Winters End, but this explosion would be on a much bigger scale to a point Gotham would be considered a “No Man’s Land”. Here Though this wouldn’t make Gotham uninhabitable for life, Ivy doesn’t like how it will kill all the current plants in Gotham and though Bane does try and comfort her on the fact and they wouldn’t be dying in vain, Ivy ends their partnership. We get a big fight where eventually the heroes defeat the over Venom infused Bane and henchman along with Ivy but the bomb is about to go off, and it’s here where in a scene similar to Arkham Knight, where Ivy decides to use plant powers to make a cocoon around the bomb to hopefully decrease the blast while giving Batman and others time to get everyone out. Luckily this works as the plants safely absorbs the detonation without causing too much trouble to Gotham, and even Ivy is able to get out and join them but short dies but again tells everyone the beauty of nature, and this is shown as her body slowly turns into flora that beautifies the land the heroes are standing on. The movie ends with several plot points in the Batman movie series wrapping up like Bane (still recovering from the Venom injections) going to jail but not before he tells Bruce that he won’t tell anyone he is Batman as not only is this a way to pay him back for saving him from the bomb while unconscious, but he ask Bruce to help rebuild his home town, which Bruce promises to do. We also get some touching moments with Bruce with everyone else as Dick and Barbara are moving to Bludhaven to look for new jobs but says they will keep in touch and Bruce can always call them if they need help in Gotham. We also FINALLY see Bruce and Selina getting together where Bruce proposes to her, and we see them at their wedding. We then cut to decades later to a more futuristic Gotham as we see a new Batman taking out some thugs and we find out he is the son of Bruce and Selina who is now Gotham’s new protector getting advice from his father at the Batcave. I also could see a AU ending where and older Bruce and Selina take their son out and are mugged but before anyone does anything, “Batman” comes in and saves them, find out that Dick has become the new Batman and Bruce’s son says he hopes he could be Robin one day. Do you want to see a Fanscription like this one day? What would want to see in a story like this? Okay, here’s one for you: given the emergence of ‘special’ weapons for individual Bat characters really largely started in 1991 with Tim’s bo staff, does every character need to have an iconic weapon?

What is Babs’? You and I would say escrima sticks, and she’s arguably had them longer than Dick (she’s USED them on page longer than he has), but there are plenty of people who would see that as tedious copying of Dick.

What is Cass’? Is the lack of any weapon definable as an iconic special weapon? But she she still uses a grapple (if not batarangs much at all even).

Kate Kane? Bette? Is Kate’s a gun? But she doesn’t always carry one and she very rarely USES it if even if she’s carrying one.

Jean-Paul? Is the flaming sword specifically different enough to Damian’s sword, especially given the crossover in swords where Dick gave a LOA special sword to Michael Lane even though Ra’s gave it to Dick in particular to be a pain while Damian first had his sword?

Steph and Barbara are the only ones who’ve really used those trick batarangs and while I don’t particularly like the gooperang (it’s a bit too Arrow for me) it’s got resonance with some of the Bronze Age makeup weapons Barbara had. (Ugh)

Heck, what is BRUCE’S iconic weapon? Everything in his toolbelt is generalised and used by everyone else. He created the set of what a Bat weapon is but that’s only noticeably exclusive for him if he’s in a team book with multiple families.

While I don’t disagree that iconic weapons exist, I think there’s a fair argument most of them are shared between a few people, not exclusives.

One one hand like yes I do think for iconography purposes Steph should have her own weapon (I know the three sectioned staff is the common answer) but on the other hand I think it does fit her character more to not have a particular weapon, or at least one that doesn't require such specific training, but on the other other hand is that in-narrative justification for the real-world mistreatment of Stephanie's character, but on the other other other hand...
